Malaysian Ribs
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 2-4 large Spanish onions, halved and thinly sliced
- 1/2 tsp coarse salt, or to taste
- 1/2 tsp black pepper, or to taste
- 1 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 8 shortribs (or 4 Lb of pork ribs)
- 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 whole start anise (optional)
- 1 bay leaf
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- In sauce pan melt oil and butter on medium-high heat
- In sauce pan cook onions, salt, and pepper until softened for about 5 minutes
- Turn down and simmer until golden brown
- In large casserole dish combine vinegar, soy sauce, wine, water, sugar, garlic, anise, and bay leaf and bring to a boil
- Add ribs
- Place onions on top
- Cook for 2-3 hours until meat falls apart
